TAMRON 70-180mm F2.8 zoom evolves into the “G2” 2nd-generation with Vibration Compensation
Back in May, 2020, TAMRON released the fast-aperture telephoto zoom lens, 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A056). Based on TAMRON’s concept of “all photographers should enjoy easy and comfortable shooting with fast-aperture telephoto zoom lens,” this 70-180mm F2.8 achieved compact and lightweight size together with high image quality, that earned high evaluation worldwide.
Never content to rest on their laurels, in fall, 2023, TAMRON announced the further evolution of the 1st-generation (Model A056) and the launch of the 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 (Model A065), the fast-aperture telephoto zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. Here, TAMRON introduces the most important improvements that have been made to 1st-generation model.
Fast-aperture telephoto zoom lenses in the 70-200mm class are frequently used for hand-held shooting and require mobility. The new G2 model is newly equipped with TAMRON’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism. The lens maintains the maneuverability of class-leading compact size (156.5mm / 6.2in) and weight (855g / 30.2oz) while enabling shooting with greater stability.

The new 70-180mm F2.8 G2 zoom is equipped with TAMRON’s proprietary VC mechanism. VC effectively suppresses camera shake that tends to occur when shooting handheld under low-light conditions such as dimly lit interiors and night landscapes, vastly expanding the freedom of shooting without a tripod such as portrait.
The design has been completely reworked and features a generous and effective arrangement of special lens elements. These combine to deliver high resolution without compromise throughout the entire zoom range. Another feature everyone enjoys is the beautiful, soft bokeh that only the fast F2.8 aperture can provide.
Shooting at close distances that were possible only during manual focusing with the 1st-generation model is now possible when using autofocus with the new 70-180mm F2.8 G2. TAMRON has succeeded in shortening the MOD to 0.3m (11.8in) at 70mm. In addition, with an outstanding maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.6, users can enjoy distinctive and powerful composition unique to the lens.

The new 70-180mm F2.8 G2 zoom is equipped with a VXD linear motor focus mechanism. Tracking performance when following moving subjects has received a further boost while maintaining TAMRON’s highest-ever level of high-speed, high-precision autofocus. Furthermore, the latest version of VXD linear motor mechanism further enhances the tracking performance of moving objects such as vehicles and sports action, ensuring you never miss decisive scenes.
TAMRON Lens Utility lets users change lens settings, assign camera body functions, and update firmware2 when necessary. Users may customize functions for various still photography and videography shooting styles.
2 Lens firmware updates are not supported with the Mobile version. Performing firmware updates requires the TAMRON Lens Utility for PC and a computer.
