To roam a city, wandering around without a plan, watching life on the streets, chatting with the locals – that’s freedom for me. As an artist and photographer, these are the moments from which I draw my greatest inspiration. For me the camera and the lens are like a “translator”, the universal language of photography helps me to communicate even if I don’t speak the language.
Like everyone else, I prefer to travel with small luggage. The less I carry, the easier it is to move around and connect with people. I enjoy being out early in the morning, when the city is still quiet and everybody is focused on the day ahead. Around lunch time I look out for bright lights and dark shadows. When the surrounding buildings are illuminated by the sun, you often get wonderful lighting moods on the street level.
I love to take just one lens, that covers all my photographic needs. For me, the ideal city companion is the new 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 because this telephoto zoom lens is astonishingly small and light. It offers such a large focal length range, and the image quality is simply superb. Regardless of whether I use it to photograph a classic portrait, a street scene or an architectural detail, the resolution is very high, even in the corners of the image.
