Great landscape pictures literally draw the viewer into the scenery. Ultra wide-angle lenses, such as the 20mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 (Model F050) are the ideal choice for this genre. This focal length records the landscape naturally with only minimal distortions. Of course, the same applies to architectural shots. Compared to even shorter focal length, I need less time when correcting collapsing lines.
I like to work with prime lenses, because they force me to choose my position very carefully. I cannot simply turn the zoom ring to change the framing of the picture, but have to get active myself. Thus, the photographic process becomes more lively, as it challenges me more and stimulates my creativity.
Fixed focal lenses also offer technical advantages. Mainly because they are small, light and compact. In addition, the 20mm F/2.8 achieves a great image quality and produces very sharp images. It also records impressive details when taking pictures with an open aperture. Chromatic aberrations are practically not an issue with the lens. In short, this lens gives me a lot of advantages to create the perfect picture.
The Minimum Object Distance of the 20mm F/2.8 is only 11cm, which is really great for close-up pictures with powerful perspectives and spectacular depth. I also appreciate the filter diameter of 67mm, which is identical for all lenses in the series. Therefore, I no longer need to carry different adapter rings to attach my filters to the lenses.
The picture was taken in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park in Portugal, a large woodland area with lots of eucalyptus trees. Many are covered with ivy, moss and fern, which makes a beautiful sight in foggy weather. I was able to capture the atmosphere perfectly with the 20mm F/2.8. The path gives the symmetrical image structure an attractive depth. The viewer gets the feeling that he himself is standing in the middle of the forest.
For me, the 20mm F/2.8 is a lens that fits perfectly into any "Instagram lens collection". By that I mean smart lenses that ready to take anywhere and are not a burden to carry. Thanks to low weight and compactness, attaching them to compact system cameras make taking great pictures even more fun.
