Compatibility with Nikon D-40
Please note that our current non Built-In Motor interchangeable lenses for Nikon AF cameras do not function in the AF mode when attached to the newly developed D-40 camera. Since our non Built-In Motor Nikon AF lenses do not have a built in AF motor we ask that you use the MF mode.

Compatibility with Nikon D40, D40X, D60
Please note that these new cameras do not provide mechanical linkage to the lens gearing for Auto Focus and require that the lens have its own motor to operate the auto focus system. Tamron is currently transitioning the focus system in our lens line to work with this new system. We designate these lenses as BIM (Built-In Motor) and the Nikon mount version has NII stated in the model number. The following Tamron lenses have the new motor and are readily available:
THESE LENSES ARE COMPATIBLE
SP AF17-50mm Di II (model A16NII)
AF18-200mm Di II (model A14NII)
AF18-250mm Di II (model A18NII)
AF18-270mm VC Di II (model B003NII)
SP AF28-75mm Di (model A09NII)
AF28-300mm VC Di (model A20Nii)
AF70-300mm Di (model A17NII)
SP AF70-200mm Di (model A001NII)
SP AF90mm Di (model 272NII)
If you own a non-Built-In Motor interchangeable lens from any manufacturer, the auto focus will not work and you will need to manually focus.
